What type of battery do drones use?
Most FPV and hobby drones use LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries, chosen for their high power-to-weight ratio and ability to deliver the large, rapid current bursts multirotors need.
What is the 80% rule for LiPo batteries?
It refers to storage charging: LiPo cells kept long-term should be discharged or charged to roughly storage voltage, about 3.8V per cell, often described loosely as 80% charge, rather than left fully charged, since storing them at full charge degrades the cells faster and increases fire risk.
Is LiPo or LiFePO4 better?
LiPo has a higher power-to-weight ratio, which is why it dominates FPV and racing use. LiFePO4 is heavier for the same capacity but is significantly more stable and safer to charge and store, which is why it's more common in transmitters and ground equipment than in the aircraft itself.
Is LiPo or Li-ion better for drones?
It depends on the build. LiPo cells can discharge current much faster, higher C-rating, which is why they dominate FPV, racing, and freestyle where you need big power bursts. Li-ion cells, like 18650s or 21700s, pack more energy per gram and hold their capacity better over many charge cycles, but can't discharge nearly as fast, so they suit long-range and cinematic or endurance builds that cruise at a lower, steadier power draw rather than punch-heavy flying.
Can I leave LiPo batteries charging unattended overnight?
This isn't recommended. LiPo cells can catch fire if damaged, overcharged, or faulty, so best practice is to always charge in a fireproof bag or container and stay present while charging, never leaving batteries charging unattended overnight.
