What type of motor is used in FPV drones?
FPV drones use brushless motors almost exclusively. Brushless motors last longer, run more efficiently, and produce far more power for their weight than brushed motors, which are now mostly limited to the smallest tiny whoop style micro quads.
How much do drone motors cost?
Individual FPV motors typically run from around £7-8 for small or budget options up to roughly £30-35 for premium freestyle or racing motors, with most mid-range 5-inch build motors sitting somewhere in between. Larger heavy-lift motors for bigger platforms cost more again.
How long do drone motors last?
Brushless motors have no brushes to wear out, so with normal use and occasional bearing maintenance they can last for years of flying. The main wear points are the bearings and the motor bell from prop strikes or crashes, not the windings themselves.
How do I choose a brushless motor for a drone?
Match the motor's stator size and KV rating to your frame size and prop size: bigger props generally want lower KV, smaller props want higher KV. Also match the motor's rated voltage and current to your battery cell count and ESC's amp rating so nothing gets pushed past its limits.
