Frequently asked questions
What is an ESC on a drone?
ESC stands for Electronic Speed Controller. It sits between the flight controller and the motors, converting the battery's DC power into the rapid switching signal that drives each brushless motor at the speed the flight controller commands.
What is a 4-in-1 ESC?
A 4-in-1 ESC combines four individual speed controllers, one per motor, onto a single board, instead of four separate ESCs wired individually. It simplifies wiring and is the standard choice on most modern quadcopter builds.
How do I choose an ESC for an FPV drone?
Match the ESC's continuous and burst current rating to your motors, with some headroom, match its voltage rating to your battery's cell count, and check it supports the same protocol, such as DShot, as your flight controller's firmware.
Can a drone fly without an ESC?
No. Without an ESC there's no way to vary each motor's speed independently, and independent motor speed control is how a multirotor steers and stabilises itself.
